Oily Skin Wins: Fresh Umbrian Clay Review

Fresh Umbrian Clay

Oh, Fresh - let me count the ways I love thee. While I'm at it, I'll also count the ways I LOATHE thee. Can you please stop putting cucumber extract in everything? I'm allergic. And while you're at it, maybe lower the price of your lip balms by about $10. Thanks.

Moving on: this Umbrian Clay duo has been keeping my skin in check for the past few months so I figured it deserved its own post. We won't get into exactly what "Umbrian" means, though if you're curious Fresh has a quaint little section on their site with pictures of rustic rooftops to tell the story.

The Umbrian Clay Mattifying Mask is really the star of the show. It's a great little multi-tasker that can be used as a regular mask, an overnight spot treatment or - if you're feeling rebellious - a cleanser. The olive-hued cream dries matte on the skin, and I love that you don't have to paint on a thick layer in order to see results. I'll mask about once a week, leaving it on for 10-15 minutes while I play GTA V or paint my toenails. After rinsing, my skin is soft, supple and matte. There's also no 5-hour window of waiting for redness to die down (I'm looking at you, Aztec Healing).

But my favorite way to use this is as an overnight spot treatment. I'll dab it on a blemish (or, let's be real, my entire chin and forehead) and when I wake up in the morning, any raised bumps, inflammation or redness has left the building, leaving only soft, clear skin. The fact that this stuff doesn't dry you out with repeated use is mind boggling.

It's pricey at $49, but this has replaced my even-pricier GLAMGLOW Supermud. You also get more product in a hygenic tube, so no complaints here.

Bottom: Umbrian Clay Mattifying Exfoliant

The Umbrian Clay Mattifying Exfoliant is good too, and can be used as a mask if you like a little more grit a few times a week. At only $32 its much cheaper than Fresh's other scrubs, and only half the price of their infamous Sugar Face Polish.

The actual scrubbing is performed by finely ground olive seeds and bamboo (olea europaea seed powder and bambusa arundinacea stem extract) which provide a lovely clean feeling. I'm loving the blend of fuller's earth and kaolin they use, and combined with all of the extracts and oils your skin feels soft and clean after rinsing.

Since I've been using both of the above a few times per week, I've noticed a big difference in the amount of oil I feel on my face throughout the day. I'm still somewhat of greasy mess, but I'm not sopping up oil 3 times a day with my blotting sheets anymore.

I have yet to try the Mattifying Serum or the Oil-Free Face Lotion, due to the aforementioned cucumber extract issue (side-eye) but the Purifying Treatment Bar seems intriguing. Although bar soap in general feels a little old-school.

  1. The fresh Umbrian Bar has been a lifesaver for me! I cannot rave about it enough. I use it as a face wash, Mask and spot treatment. Non drying and bye bye blemishes! Give it a try!!!

  2. These three things will improve your skin as a whole and can help balance out some of the problems your body may be experiencing, which may be leading to excess oil or dryness. Reference
