Tried, True and Not that New: 5 Makeup Essentials for Oily Skin

Top 5 Makeup Products for Oily Skin

Yes, it's winter. So what? You could still go sledding down the bank of oil on my face. This post is for the rest of you greasy betches out there who can't seem to get a break, no matter what season it is. Here are my top, all-time favorite (gasp!) products hated by my oil glands. They're assholes, and I'm constantly putting them in their place.

1.  L'oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation

L'oreal Infallible Pro Matte Foundation Review

You gotta love that my first pick is under $15. This is hands down one of my top makeup discoveries of 2015. I've never been able to find decent long-wearing foundations at the drugstore - period. But this glorious beige goo holds up throughout long workdays and any conditions I throw at it. It claims to last 24 hours but what I usually get is around 15. I can put this on before work at ~7 AM and it will still look decent around 10 PM. It has replaced my previous holy grail foundations, MAC Pro Longwear and Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation. The L'oreal feels lighter and works just as well, if not better.

Yes, it's heavy coverage but I've never found any "matte" tinted moisturizers (like the ever-blogged about Jouer Matte Moisture Tint) to hold up on really oily skin. If you don't like medium-to-full coverage then use a BeautyBlender and add a little moisturizer.

2. MAC Pro Longwear Concealer

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer Review

The holiest of holy grails for me. This is my ride or die concealer that no other concealing product comes close to. You rarely find concealers that work just as well under the eyes as they do all over the face - this almost functions like two different products in those areas.

Yes, the pump is wonky and releases way too much product, but I'll usually apply this all over my entire t-zone when I'm wearing a light base (link to my current favorite), so it's just enough for my needs. This will hold up through the entire day, no matter what, and never needs a touch up. The small $20 vial lasts me a good 5-6 months with daily use. If you don't need a lot, squeeze a pump into a sample jar and work out of that for a week or so.

3. Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder

Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder Review

I always come back to this powder. I've gone through 4 containers and nothing beats it for day to day wear. The blend of silica and kaolin they use is foolproof - it glides over skin, without emphasizing any dry patches but absorbs oil like a champ. Obviously, since it's silica based, don't take any flash photography. The container is ridiculous with only one hole in the sifter (why??) but its easily removable and not enough to dissuade me from repurchasing. I have a lot of favorite setting powders (Benefit POREfessional Agent Zero Shine, Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder and Make Up For Ever Super Matte Loose, to name a few) but this trumps them all. Buy it.

4.  Long-wearing Stain + Long-wearing Powder Blush

Benefit Posietint Review and Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Dollface Review

This is more of an application method, but I do have two product recommendations for you. The gel-stains from Benefit (Posietint, ChaChatint and Lollitint) are some of my all-time favorite products - they last beautifully on the cheeks (make sure to blend out quickly or you will have a colorful stripe on your face) but when topped with Tarte's Amazonian Clay blushes, they wear like iron.

Tarte's blush formula has also been a longtime favorite - the colors are smooth, pigmented and decently longwearing. Most blushes tend to wear down on me within 6-7  hours, and I like at least 12 hours from any beauty product. These last around 8 by themselves. But the stain + powder blush combo is my go-to when I have a long day ahead of me. One of my favorite combos is Benefit Posietint + Tarte's blush in Dollface (shown here). I'll usually throw Posie in my bag for lip touch ups throught the day, and  I can dab a little on my cheeks if I'll be out even later.

5. Make Up For Ever Aqua Range

Make Up For Ever Aqua Review

Pencils, from top to bottom: MUFE Aqua Lip in 8C, Aqua Eyes in 25L, Aqua Lip in 15C and Aqua Eyes in 3L (all well loved); behind them is MUFE Aqua Seal and Aqua Brow in 10
For color, there is no better long-wearing makeup line. The whole collection was originally created for the Parisian Aquatic Ballet - so everything is richly formulated and supremely waterproof. I love every single thing I've tried from the range - most notably the eyeliners, lip liners, brow products and cream eyeshadows. The Smokey Lash mascara is also divine, and lasts eons without smudging. I also have to give a shoutout to the Aqua Brow, a longtime love that was Dipbrow before Dipbrow.

_________

You'll notice I didn't have a makeup primer on the list - I'm still on the hunt for a favorite that controls oil and smooths out pores/skin texture. For every day, I love Benefit's the POREfessional but it isn't amazing for oil control. Let me know if you have any recommendations - I'd love to have them!
