60 Days of Saving: My Summer No-Buy [Day 1]

THE TIME HAS COME.

I think I need to start off this post by disclosing something somewhat embarrassing: I tell myself I'm going on a "no-buy" at least once a month. I tell myself I'm going to post about it, or make a video, but I never do...because I always want the option of buying if something great comes along, and if the internet doesn't know, then I can keep doing it.

Oops.

My obsessive shopping and deal-seeking habits have gotten to a place that feels unsettling and downright stressful (I know, stress about shopping, poor me). Over the two years I've spent crazy amounts of money purchasing anything I can get my hands on, and I know I need to slow my roll. My main vices, like any other digital content and ecommerce junkie, are beauty and fashion. And I need to take a serious break from buying both of those things.

Originally I wanted this to be a 100 days project, but after sharing with a friend she (wisely) suggested I start with 30. I do think a real challenge would do me good (as well as give me some decent blogging content), so I settled on 60. So until August 16th I'm officially on a beauty and fashion no-buy.

Well, okay, so this won't be without a few exceptions, because I know me, and I am probably going to crack and least a few times during this project.

Exception #1: Skincare

Now, this only refers to moisturizers (of which I am running out of my primary and have nothing to replace it with) and oil-based cleansers (of which I have one, which will be gone within ~1 month). I am allowed to purchase 1 moisturizer and 1 balm cleanser between now and August 16th, when this is over. My other maybe that I'm allowing myself deals with any scary breakouts that may arise - If I get a flare up, I'm giving myself full permission to buy 1-2 items that I know will work, if I don't have them on hand.

Exception #2: The Makeup Show

Do I need anymore makeup? Of course not. But I plan on attending The Makeup Show Pop-Up in SF in August, and I want to be able to purchase a few things - but my limit? $250. Hakuhodo won't be there, so I don't think I'll be that tempted.

I wanted to add another exception in here for 1-2 clothing items but to be honest, I don't need it - any of it. Around the time this project ends the summer sales will start rolling in, and I'll hopefully have a little $$ set aside for my September Mexico trip.

My goals? Mainly just for me to stop feeling like I omgmusthavethisrightnoworelse every time one of my favorite brands or retailers announces a sale. It's gotten to a point where I feel stressed that I'm not going to get the absolute lowest price on an item if I pass it up, or that it's gone forever and I'll always regret not picking x, y or z up.

I have a lot of boring life goals I need to save for, as well as a big (let's hope) Asia trip next year.

I also have a few bigger, luxury purchases that I'm ready to save for, and I really want to stop settling for ho-hum pieces.

It would be great to do daily updates on this project, but I just don't have the time. I'm hoping I can pop on every few days to update you with my thoughts and the things that I'm lusting over, but can't buy. I hope someone will be able to enjoy them!

Talk soon...wish me luck! xx
